Question about metatags?
I recently posted a website thru MS Office Live. Under the Properties tab a “search engine optimization” window pops up. Two text boxes open up. One is marked “keyword metatags” the other “description metatags”.
What is the difference between these two? What words should I be looking for? Synonyms for my service? Zip codes? Cities? Which words would go in which box?
I operate a service company.

Keywords are those terms the people use to find the websites of their desire… for example, if your website is about transport services in london, then the people looking out for the same will use these terms ( keywords)
” transport services london, london transport services, london transport service providers, transport providers london, etc.,”"
The website should also have a description so that the search engines will be able to know wht the site is all about. for example, the above site should have the following description.
” affordable london transport provided by xxxx company. We deliver goods, provide transport for vacation, packers and movers also”
That was just an example. While choosing the title and description, you need to take care about the size, and some other factors. Because, you will be given a rank in the search engines by looking at your keywords, and the description, title.
But, just with these keywords, and description you can’t be on any search engine. You need to work on marketing your site online which is called as SEO or SEM.

The difference is, one matters and one does not. The meta description is often used by search engines as the little “snippet” of text underneath the title in search results. So this helps searchers qualify the results, and ideally click through to your site. But there is evidence that using important keywords within this tag also helps with search engine optimization (SEO).
The meta keywords tag is virtually useless in the eyes of the big search engines. It doesn’t appear anywhere on page, so visitors won’t see it either. There’s no harm to include geographic keywords such as city/state/zip, but don’t go out of your way.

The difference between “keyword metatags” and “description metatags”.
Let’s say I have a website focused on traveling to the 2008 Summer Olympics.
My “keyword metatags” would potentially include…
“Summer Olympics”
My “description metatags” would potentially include…
“traveling to the 2008 Summer Olympics”
Thus the difference is one is a keyword phrase while the other describes what your web offering is about.
Further, some people will tell you that keyword metatags are of no important any more. While I will agree that the level of importance they play has dramatically decreased; saying that they play no roll at all is not quite the case. With that said, I wouldn’t make keyword metatags your main Internet Marketing focus, but I certainly wouldn’t leave it out of the equation either.
As for which keywords to focus on, I would use a process named bum marketing to answer your question. Here is an audio file that describes that further.

In short it takes you from competing with the masses for untargeted keywords (ie 93,500,000 competitors for the keyword Olympics) to finding the low hanging fruit which no one else is picking (ie 4,590 competitors for the keyword phrase of “summer olympics travel”). This results in highly targeted visitors with less competition for you to fight against. Perhaps the best part is that all the research can be done quite quickly and for free.
I’ll let the audio file tell you how you can then capitalize financially upon this informtion should you choose to do so.
